Passion Project as a Teenager (Our World Music): Insight From Me To You

My name is Aayna Bhatheja, and I am the founder of the free resource Our World Music (ourworldmusic2.com); this program strives to teach various cultural origins of music that aid in mentoring kids to cultivate their own unique voice through the language of music. I have always enjoyed many kinds of music since I could learn to speak, so creating a resource that kids can use to enrich their foundation of music is nothing but fulfilling to me. By creating this program, I have learned myriad lessons of how best to go about following through with a passion project. With this, my goal is to guide others to feel inspired and ready to create something impactful while simultaneously being personal to themselves.

How to put your passion project into action:

First, take some time to think about a cause or some things that are extremely important to you and what you may want to share with the world. For example, one of my most dearly held passions is music; this built the foundation of how I cultivated my voice in the world for various causes such as empowering women. I found a way to blend my love of music and creativity with my passion for activism and empowerment of women as I created a website that accomplishes the ultimate goal to “empower students to find their voice through music” which is the mission statement of this website.

Second, gather a team of collaborators who share this passion with you to maximize the impact and reach a broader audience. I have several collaborators who share my love of music, empowerment, and individuality so that the experience is collectively impactful and meaningful among the students and teachers.

Last but not least, take action NOW. This can be doing research on your passion project or reaching out to people and building a team. Writing down a plan or setting small goals over the course of a period of time is a great way to start the process. Create a Web account for your website, buy a domain name, create a flier to gather attention, etc. Make the plan even if you have a busy day and assure yourself that it is happening, not that it will happen eventually.

Building something from the ground up can be daunting, but know that you have a support system whether it is a teacher/professor, family, or friends and collaborators. The early stages won’t be easy and you will spend much time creating a rich foundation, but the end result will be worth it, take it from me. And most importantly, It should also be enjoyable! Finding a new interest in web design, planning, and other parts of the process can be extremely rewarding. For me, I know that when the class is over and I see one kid smiling, it was all worth it.
