SOTW: “Most Girls” by Hailee Steinfeld

This week’s song is called “Most Girls” by Hailee Steinfeld. I particularly resonate with this song because I strongly believe that no girl or woman should be shamed for what they enjoy, even if it isn’t what women typically do. This could be a job that women have a minority share in or a role in society that women are expected to do and enjoy.

Some girls, feel best in their tiny dresses

Some girls, nothin' but sweatpants, looking like a princess

Some girls, kiss new lips every single night

The opening stanza in this song accounts for both ends of the same realm of girls - the ones who like to dress up and go out, and the ones who like to dress down and stay home. The best part about it is that she doesn’t say one is better than the other - they both exist in their perfect way.

You know some days you feel so good in your own skin

But it's okay if you wanna change the body that you came in

'Cause you look greatest when you feel like a damn queen

This stanza underscores the idea that it’s not about if you look the ‘best’ (also known as what society finds acceptable in beauty standards, but that’s another battle for another day) but rather how you feel in your own body and mind. Your energy is radiated from the inside out; if you feel your best then you look your best because people can pick up on energy depending on how YOU truly feel.

Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful

Most girls, work hard, go far, we are unstoppable

Most girls, our fight to make every day

No two are the same

This stanza is the beginning of the chorus and I love that it starts off on such a positive note. Steinfeld makes a point that most girls have positive qualities and can achieve anything they want, as well as notes that everyone is different in the best way. These lyrics speak to so many girls and young women because it reiterates the fact that everyone has something different to bring to the table, but it doesn't mean that we aren’t unique and valuable in our own ways.

I challenge you to think of the qualities that make up YOU. Not the qualities that colleges look for or the ones that your parents or peers look for. What are the morals, hobbies, books, music, and other parts of life that make up the person you are today? Write it down in a journal or discuss it with someone. I want you to know that you ARE special and you ARE an amazing person.
