Demi Lovato is an inspiration to all as her music reflects her bravery and life story. This song is particularly special because it is her story of continuing to be a warrior even when life seems to betray her time and time again with unfortunate setbacks. However, she embraces all her life experiences because all those battle scars made her who she is today.
All the pain and the truth
I wear like a battle wound
So ashamed, so confused
I was broken and bruised
This section represents Lovato as she struggles to get back up from a curveball life threw at her that made her “broken and bruised.” However, the chorus tells us, the listeners, that she got back up and fought; the battles she faced only made her stronger.
Now I'm a warrior
Now I've got thicker skin
I'm a warrior
I'm stronger than I've ever been
And my armor, is made of steel, you can't get in
I'm a warrior
And you can never hurt me again
She says that she is now a warrior, and anything that ever pulled her under the water has given her thicker skin to be stronger for the next time. She explicitly says “you can never hurt me again,” and this is because of her generating the strength from her lowest point to get back up and be the warrior she needs to be.
We can all learn something from Demi Lovato. Even if we don’t go through significant life experiences or have been through a life or death situation, we must still get back up when life tosses us on the floor. To become a warrior, you have to believe you are capable of doing so. We can all be warriors and show up for ourselves every day because we all deserve the best we can give ourselves. So, go be a warrior and ask yourself: how can I show up for myself better today than I did yesterday?
